Is Rem blued parts really black?
Was looking for a early R bolt, butt plate, and cocking piece for a A3 and all the "NOS" parts look black oxide or black phosphate coated not what I would call blued. Is this the correct blue finish? Was gonn'a hit a gun show and internet and hate to buy the wrong parts.

The bolt, butt plate, and cocking piece for a Remington '03-A3 have a dark blue finish. It's not black and it's not parkerized. The blue color is very definite, but it's a dark navy blue color.
Hope this helps.

Thanks. I saw a few parts at a show and they were all ruff matt black. They swore they were "NOS" but they felt like phosphate gray/green but black. Passed on them cause they weren't blued.

the actual term is Black oxide coating... some will look more black then others depending on how long they were in the tank, or hard the steel is, ect..
manganese phosphate may look black on some metal, it is a charcoal grey,,.Zinc phosphate is a light grey in color....
iron oxide phosphate is not used much in the firearm industry, and is a darker color as well.
used more in the auto and motorcycle world for scews bolts ect....

Yea, I've Manganese parkerized a few weapons before and that's what they looked like. They had that "grainy" corse texture. Not the smooth blue you think you'd find on guns. Late war or replacement/rebuild bolts and misc parts were black oxide or parkerized gray green? Ok, I think I've found a blued "R" buttplate on fleabay.
