Dean's Gun Restoration.....How can I repair his Restored M1?
IN 2001, I bought a M1
from Dean. In 2001, I fired it once and the gun jammed. For a variety of reasons, I did not pick up the rifle until recently to see what is wrong. I compared my M1 to another and saw that the bolt is not going fully forward and thus the stud on the bolt is not going into its notch on the receiver. There is a burr on this end of the barrel and I believe this burr is preventing the bolt from traveling fully forward. I don't believe firing one round would have caused this burr.
I am retired and on Social Security and do not have much discretionary income. I have contacted Dean and asked him to repair the rifle at no cost to me and his position is the M1 is beyond his 1 year warranty.
Can someone tell me how to repair the rifle or if necessary does one know a reasonable M1 gunsmith in the Huntsville AL area?

This is common with M1's and M14
/M1a's some rifles do it while others do not, the bolt is kissing the top of the barrels hood after a few rounds the two will wear in together, grease your m1 up and hit the range after a few clips she should feel slick and smooth.

It appears to me that your oprod has dismounted. Put it back in the track and see though it may be worn to the point of needing repair. George

Looks like the o.r. has jumped out of the receiver track. that would keep the action from closing completely.

Op Rod not in track. Re-assemble and see if it stays in the track. If worn beyond serviceable replace the OP rod.

Are you using ammunition correct for a M1
Garand ?

Aside from a fairly coarse bead/sand blast before finishing, the parts enlarged here don't look hideous. Possible that the op rod was pulled from it's track when the bolt was being eased forward?

The important thing here Jon is it's likely something simple. Strip, clean and assemble carefuly and try it out with some reliable ammo of current manufacture. Do like these guys said and grease the parts and give it a chance. If it still doesn't work, get back to us.

OK, That's good. Just try the strip clean and grease before assembling and see what happens.
Having a second man on hand that's used to these guns might help. You'd be surprised what a witness can pick up. Some small thing that matters?
