It would be highly unusual for a soldier in the field to have access to the equipment it would have taken to cut, grind, weld, and polish the bayonet. Except for the ones that escaped by being taken home, most of the Model 1905 bayonets were cut back to 10 inches in WWII. That would have been a prime candidate for making a knife, as following WWII they were sold in huge quantities.Information
