Shock Wave Targets

Has anybody used the exploding target? We can buy it here as a non-explosive. Requires mixing and at least a .223 bullet.

I bought "Star" brand exploding targets from Cabelas a couple years ago. I shot it first with a 7.62x39 HP and then a 55gr .223 FMJ and then a 230gr .45acp JHP and couldnt get any of them to blow up. I took them back to Cabelas an they gave me new ones and told me I didnt mix them enough. I took the new ones, mixed them twice as much as I was supposed to according the directions and repeated the process with all three targets and guns and couldnt them to blow either. I took them back and got a refund. I was disappointed that they didnt work.

i am surprised they took them back. Once mixed, they are "less" stable and the ones that were shot, have been sensitised. Glad you got your money back. They are $7.99 each here for 1 ib. They are coming up with a two pound shaker according to their web site.

Stuff looks like ammonium nitrate and a liquid detonator mix. Around here AN is used for corn due to its high nitrogen content as it breaks down.

Years ago I went to a shoot where they had some of thst kind of stuff. I think it was called TANERITE. Great fun. All of it went bang.

Stuff looks like ammonium nitrate and a liquid detonator mix. Around here AN is used for corn due to its high nitrogen content as it breaks down.

This stuff too looked like ammonium nitrate but the calylist was a powder that looks like gunpowder. I believe it was $4.99 on sale.

Local fellow recently acquired his license to mfg these items under the name of Shoc-Shot. Bought 15 lbs in 1/2 lb containers for $4 each and it appears to be similar to above iterations such as the fertilizer and a powdered additive. I mixed one of the 1/2 jars and then poured the contents into 4 empty prescription bottles, so approx. 2 oz each. I hit the first one at 50 yds with a .223 Rem and it cratered the dirt upon detonating. The report was louder than the rifle shot and pleasantly surprizing. The flyer that came with the jars stated that this product is perfectly legal to own and use, but that setting them off near populated areas might yield a "disturbing the peace" citation. I am inclined to agree as the full 1/2 lb jar I set off was at 200 yds and the resultant boom was, to say the least, impressive. The smoke cloud that remained made it impossible to continue to shoot at that distance. There are larger sizes available, but I don't know if I can get far enough away from the "public" to set one off without a response from the local constabulary.

By law , you have to mix these where you use them. When we have a shoot , we mix them first thing. They give a bigger bang if left mixed for a time , say mix 'em in the morning and shoot in the afternoon.

I bought some of the shockwave brand at the local gunshop today. I'm going to shoot it tomorrow and will let you know how it went.
