And it is rather odd to me that the stock on yours is blonde as opposed to the reddish I'm used to seeing on T99s. Thanks for posting Frank

I don;t think the wood looks refinished IMHO. The urushi varnish they used varied in color somewhat. Late war guns, in general, seem to have gotten lighter on average, perhaps the coat was applied less thickly over time, but it's fits a pattern in my opinion.

Yeah, I agree it doesn't look like it has been refinished. I'm so used to seeing the reddish color Even my last ditch is red. Frank, yours looks good blonde! I'm partial to red heads myself

Thanks Bill, I bought the rifle at an estate sale. The Nephew was conducting the sale. His Uncle had passed some time ago and the Aunt had recently passed, no children. The Uncle was never in the Military but had a garage back in the 40's & 50's in a very rural town up here. He would take things on trade and hold items until sevice was paid for. The Nephew thought that the rifle was brought in buy a vet after the war and was held for a set of tires. The rifle sat in a closet until the sale. I was the first one to pick it up and there was a line behind me waiting to see it. I bought it without a haggle $325.00. My lucky day.....Frank

Regarding the stock color, it is very close to 4 early Nagoyas that I have. Most that I encounter have that blonde color. Salt Flat

Toyo Kogyo made Type 99s are known for the reddish hue to the stock finishes, most other manufacturers have the blonder stocks.

I would date a Series One to 1941. From production records we see Nagoya made 101,150 Type 99s from April 1940-March 1941 which would account for all production of No Series and a small part of Series One. From April 1941-March 1942 there were 217,000 Type 99s made, which accounts for all Series One , Series Two, and a small batch of Series Three.

My Series One Type 99 is in similar condition to the OPs. Mine is a Solomon Islands bringback by an RNZAF ground crewman. Even has some battle damage. 100% original and correct Series One features....
