What were the large pouches used for on the left side of his web belt?

It looks like the large first aid pouch, but what year did they start using those?

It looks like a jungle first aid kit. I've actually got a complete one. bandages, anti-malaria tablets, water purification tablets, ect. But those weren't issued until 44 or so. And this looks earlier judging from the yellow pinapple on his cartridge belt. But you can see underneath the larger pouch a regular first aid bandage pouch. If this picture were bigger I probably tell you alot more about it. But it's really hard to see the little details. It could be an early rigger made first aid kit. Hard to tell, but if you found out what life issue that was from, you'd get a better idea.

Not all photos were published

Luzon is where my dad ended the war
165th AAA Battalion, 90mm anti-aircraft guns. His unit was in three invasions: Finschhafen and Hollindia, New Guinea, then Biak Island. They were sent to Luzon to train for the invasion of Japan and finshed the war there.
88 years old and enjoys a small beer every day. I am always proud of him. A good man and father.
