A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Does the Rock Island have a Springfield (SA) barrel from the 1927-1929 period? It appears to have a 1903A3 bolt.

It has a SA42 barrel and i have not fully researched the bolt but from what little i have seen i think you are correct.

No visable marks on the handle of the bolt where else would there be any I.D?

Usually on the top or bottom of the bolt or on the safety lug (look on all sides), about halfway up the bolt body.

I took the bolt out and saw on the underside of the striker body? is a circle with what looks like a 1, on the lug of the striker body looks like a P, at the root of the bolt handle underneath is a punch mark, on the bolt body rear lug is a J and on the safety lever is an R, oh and the barrel is marked "HS 5-44" i was wrong on that sorry.

If there is a J and nothing else, the bolt is an early pre-WWI.

Is that good or not so good, any issues?

It is a case-hardened bolt, but there doesn't seem to be the concern over them that there is over the receivers.
