M1 Carbine Stock

I used some of those hand wipes that haves some alcohol and put some purell, its getting better, but after i use the 0000 buffing Steel Wool and use those wipeys again, im getting lesser dirty areas, but does it have to be completely cleaned to the grain. It does look like its getting alot better. I took the wrong picture of the Handguard and the one i have is already Dark Walnut and will Stain the Stock accordingly to the Hanguard. So I can match it up. Thanks

I used to use Watco Danish oil. It comes in so many various colors from almost black to neutral that it's easy to match. It leaves a flat finish and can be applied as often as required. Use a soft cloth...

Will it give that shine from the stain. I don't want it to be bright, but just a lttle shine, but i have had seen some M1's that were pristine and all they had was just Walnut stain, i think the Military didnt want thefe Rifles to draw attention being to shiny and loud looking, Thanks

No shine. The oil just darkens and sinks in. The stain gives it the darkness you want and the oils protect from water. You apply when you're doing regular cleaning.

I've seen guys use everything from RLO to Old English furniture polish with varying results.

This is my STD PRO; when I got the stock it looked really beat up and had a lot of 'crud' build up. I used a tea kettle to clean it up. Fill kettle,get it steaming,take stock and slowly steam it back and forth. As the old oil started to drip from stock I let it drip into a throw away pan. after about an hr. it quit dripping the old oil and crud. I wiped it with 0000 steal wool and let it dry. The nert day I wiped again with steal wool and applied a coat of hot BLO, When that cooled I wiped again and put it back together. Still has dings but I like the look for an old gun.

Here it is so far in the making of a Darker Walnut...Then i will apply the linseed oil, or just wait for that nice Overton IO matching Walnut Stock I purchased for this Rifle after finding what i think is a little crack or that piece of grain looks like it splitting, so changing out parts on the stock is not going to be a problem, Thanks

Well I had the Stain from Chestnutridge already so i thougnt i would use it, i already applied the 3rd coat around 8 this morning...its looking pretty nice...but im debating if i should use the oil, but like you said it will need the oil for protection correct. Thanks

I have this spray oil for gunstocks that gunsmiths use and ive used it before, its clear satin oil, but i have to use it in the Sun and it puts a nice coat of oil and i wipe it in...it gives it a very nice but not bright shine, it looks good, i think im going to use this over the Walnut Stain, Thanks
