I's say your correct BAR on the 40's as the primers appear untouched and the cases ruptured.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. The 40s are blown wide open. Parts of the case wall are still attached and primers bulged outward.

I have now had it confirmed by an 80 year old resident of the area, that the army dug a dirty great big pit at the end of the war, and 'disposed' of unwanted ordnance. This explains the 40mm cartridge bases that I found, as they were strewn across the area where the gentleman said they had dug the pit. He also said the explosions happened every day for a two week period!!! They got rid of quite a lot of stuff.........

Makes sense. Then well after, the troops would have come along and picked up all the odds and sods blown out of the hole and fetched them back in.
