When I get the actual costing down, I will almost certainly post a survey here (and elsewhere) as to what people would prefer.....with no guarantee that is what I get made. It looks right now that a "short run" will be in the neighborhood of USD $240.00 per tube. That is an "open ended" quote with no definite exterior profile quoted yet......just the rifled (.308/7.62mm, 1-in-10" button rifled) blanks, cut to length and chambered, then have the interrupted threads cut around the chamber area. NO other barrel assy parts supplied, you'll need to pull and re-install or supply your own other parts.....
Final choice of exterior profiling will amend the cost, though not by much either way.....truthfully, I'm really only considering three options:
- "Mk II" profiled
- "Mk IV" profiled (and length)
- "NO profile" (completely rifled, chambered, and interrupted threads prepared, but left on a straight wall tube forward of the chamber area......so people can then turn the profile to their liking.
All three would start (or end in the case of #3) as straight wall tubes, at the "Mk II" OAL length.
Of primary importance.....ALL/ANY of these would be made to the "South African"-pattern of 7.62MM NATO caliber barrels....that is, they would have the reduced-length chamber area that is made to fit the unmodified original .303 BOLTS. To use these in any receiver then, all one would need is to procure a proper "8mm"/7.62mm extractor for the std bolt, and a suitable magazine........I am assuming the use of unaltered ZB39 mags initially, although I have calls out to two stamping houses now on quotes for a made-to-spec new-made .308 magazine based on the ZB39 exterior fit.
There is also the potential for something to come of working with the MagPul .308 polymer Pmag.....not sure yet. It's looking like an interesting thing......and they're right here next to me....
