Mystery Top Wood

Is anyone able to identify this mystery top wood, please? I purchased it very cheaply because I thought it would be useful to convert to fit other guns being relatively long. I thought that I would ask if anyone knew what it was for before I cut it or use it for something other than it's intended gun.

I believe your hand guard is from the Mosin Nagant 1891 series of Soviet rifles, sometimes found missing and difficult to find a correct replacement for your model.

Could be valued at around $25 US ?
