The green paint is tropical anti rust.

I figured this, which is why I would guess the rifle has been to British Malaya. The white paint on the stock is what baffles me.

Post independence Malay service perhaps?? I have quite a few surplus Lithgow L1A1 butts that came from Malay contract rifles with very similar markings.

Repaired 6/56 - June 1956. We used to stamp this into the butt along with the workshop details, such as FWM, 13FW, 2IW or 40BW

I wouldn't do anything with it, it's all part of its history.

Agreed, I've never seen a No5 retaining its jungle green, resist the urge to restore, keep her as she is, shoot and enjoy..

Agreed, she looks pretty good as is. Never mind the matched number bayonet, they were only done after the fact. Peter didn't stamp them for the units...any bayonet will do.

When Castle Armoury, a business in Vancouver BC was cleared out 25 or so years ago there were quite a few green painted No5 barreled receivers in the hundreds of stripped left overs.

What sort of repairs were performed? I know you don't know for this particular rifle. I am curious because I do intend to shoot it.
I found a BW stamp under the neck of the buttstock where the serial number is supposed to be. So I guess it isn't all matching afterall.
At this point it probably will not be getting a restoration.
Thank you for your help.
