The July, 1944 parts list for the Rifle No. 5 Mk.1 does not list a metal cap, also the pictures of the stock fore-end do not show a metal cap fitted. The picture of the bayonet shows the early single grip screw fitted.

That was the only parts list we had and were still using it into the mid 60's. There were a few stick-in amendments as I recall, relating to odds and sods but nothing spectacular. I do remember one lot of grips of the NO-hole variety!

The early rounded cap was a trial & only fitted in small numbers, very rare.

I'm not toooooo sure about that 5th Batt. We had all sorts and all sorts came as replacements from/with the same part number. If I remember too, there was also a little short one, similar to but shorter than the closed-end No4 type. If one or other of the others were obsolescent or obsolete it'd be in the parts list like the PLATE, insert or the early type No5 grenade launcher. The insert plate was another biut that was made to rust out. Just take it out and leave it out!

I thought you told us about getting one side that would be one hole and the opposite scale would be two hole...which would be handy.

metal cap on forearm
I have two NO.5's and one is dated 2-45 with H ser. No. the other is 4-45 with I ser. no.
the 2-45 has a 2nd type metal cap and the 4-45 does not have a metal cap. Both are Fazakerley.
