I was a registered bidder and was hoping to get a fair shot at the long branch light weight but that went quickly down the tubes when the opening bid went $12,500 us and it sold quickly for $22,000us. Auction estimated high price was 10,000us....but what do they know eh!!!! So I took my frustrations out on Gun Broker for the Chuck Karwin L42a1......only accessories was scope caps, scope tin and non-serialized chest...bid a respectable $6000us.....in the last few minutes it went for $9,325us!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the time it's landed in Canada you can tack on at least 40%!!
The Americans have a lot deeper pockets than I do.......recently at the Poulins auction a FG-42 magazine went for $5000something us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The deact FG-42 went for $170,000 us plus 20% buyers premium!!!! Enough said!!!

Poulins
I just felt like throwing this in for discussion. I bid on a few items, but did not win any. I prebid on two lots. The first was a Winchester M1 Garand for $2200.00 and it went to someone on the floor for $2200.00. The other was for a parts lot that had M1 Garand stocks and other parts. (I wanted the G43 locking lugs among other things) I prebid $1100.00 for that one and it went to someone on the floor for $1100.00. I also bid on another spur of the moment rifle when it looked to be going for a low ball price, but then it was chased up to more than it was worth. I was really upset about loosing to someone bidding after me that didn't bid more than I did. But when I called to ask how that could happen they explained that even though I was an internet prebid someone on the floor actually bids for me and they were slow on the draw. So, to the auctioneer, the person on the floor bid first. Oh well... I also consider the fact the auction house knows my maximum prebid before the auction even starts. It just doesn't sit well with me. I still am simmering over it. My internet connection is so slow and undependable that I doubt I could have increased my bidding before the hammer dropped even though I was watching it live. I was going to bid on a Savage No 4 US Property marked, as that's one I'm missing in my collection, coming up later in the auction but was so disgusted I closed out. It looked like somebody got a good deal on it.

Common practice in afraid, i lost out on two rifles the same way at Australian Antique Arms. Amongst other questionable practices. If I'm not there i won't bid.

The one thing that bothers me is when auction houses start the bidding at my maximum bid. When they say $1500 to $2000 as a estimate and I put a $3000 bid in and that is what it starts off at.

They tell you that up front. Be a phone bidder. Then they bring you in when floor bidding gets slow. They aren't there to help you save money and get a bargain.

It depends on the auction house. Some will bid your max bid right off the bat, and some will start at a estimated price and bid in $25.00 increments. Even E-Bay does not throw all your cards on the table right at the start.

I bid with Poulun's as my representative. I won one auction out of two and they did NOT start bidding at my highest level. :-) I was very pleased with their services. I was able to repatriate a rare Canadian sniper rifle. One can save money by reading their rules carefully (though these are confusing, so I phoned and got clarification from the nice staff in the office) paying by bank draft saves one money. The rifle was shipped very well wrapped and perhaps oddly, the rifle, scope, magazine and bolt were each wrapped separately but sent in the same gun case.
