Bayonet on a pistol never made sense to me because it would be out of position. A bayonet is essentially a stabbing weapon, not a slashing weapon and stabbing at someone at arms length when they are thrusting out a bayonet on a rifle, you're doomed. Holding it is just wrong for a thrusting weapon also.

Traditionally, if you are carrying a pistol, you are most likely carrying a sword also which would be much more effective than a bayonet on pistol.

Now, that takes us to a side, I thought swords were discontinued in use after about 1914 or 1915...and left in the steamer trunks in England?

Note there was also a rifle stock addition to the Webley and they also made speed loaders;. there are many pistols with bayonet attachments. Just because a rifle has a long range does not preclude it having a bayonet fitting, they can be used for close combat, crowd control and prisoner guarding. Look around and you will find the Japanese used bayonets on their LMG's. and all modern military rifle have bayonet fittings, they are definitely usefull

I'll bet you have...your inexperience is showing.

To have trained on and used a item, doesn't mean you have to do a lot with it. I have trained on revolvers in the modern CF, doesn't mean I actively use them. Mostly I draw a bayonet, stick it on the tac vest, and periodically check to verify it hasn't fallen out somewhere. Otherwise it is coming out for a parade, which is the more common usage.

No offense taken. I love weird ideas and concepts which are not the norm. If someone were to look at my collection they would notice it is a fair bit of the less popular and more unique (for better or worse) firearms.

As to if the bayonet on the Webley would have been effective, I personally cannot say for sure. Without handling it is hard to say. I won't dismiss it off hand as there are elements of it which I could see as practical, as well as some impractical elements.

But in the trenches they might not be effectively able to bring the rifle and bayonet into play (a Gewehr 98 or Gewehr 88 with bayonet mounted is a very long gun). It would almost be like a push dagger when mounted on the revolver (think punching someone).

And without the weight of the rifle to drive it through his kit and into him it'll be difficult. It's called inertia or momentum. Like pushing a car that's stationary - or one that's moving!
