Accuracy International L96A1 For sale

A Police issue L96A1 PM variant is being offered for sale at the Holts London sale to be held on the 21st of September 2017. Rifle # PM47141 lot number estimate £12000 - £16000 plus buyers premium.
Good luck but well out of my league....

I wonder what the actual cost for a rifle like say an L96, L42 or even say a Sniper T equated to without optics of course as I am quite sure the MoD would not fork out $16,000 GBP for a single unit.
Peter have you ever done a costing on say specking up an L96 I say without optics just a unit price to true them up bed re-barrel as I gather the defense force has access to barrels that are not for sale to the general populace be interested to here your thoughts or those of others that have worked in that sphere within the military turnstile.

Surely the original cost is academic. With most being chopped up, the rarity value of those on the open market means they will obviously command a premium. The early, non L96, PM variant that was for sale in the UK sold for £15k recently, so these prices are more than in the ball park, possibly even low given that most auctioneer estimates are deliberately low to lure in buyers. If someone wants one, and has the money, then it will sell. If two people want it, then it will sell for more. IMHO

Not sure an auction is the right place to sell it for maximum sale price

So it isn't an L96A1, it's an AI PM. Auction details below, pricing probably the right ball park. I'm surprised, given the write up, that the Constabulary Gun Club was allowed to sell it. It's an early variant with the one off magazines made by AI, which are not available. It won't accept AW mags. Has the correct AI contract 2.5-10x56 scope on. Looks nice.

A RARE POLICE-ISSUE 7.62MM 'L96A1 PM VARIANT' BOLT-MAGAZINE SNIPER RIFLE, serial no. PM47141,
28 1/2in. unsighted nitro barrel including muzzle brake, receiver mounted with a Schmidt & Bender 2 1/2-10x telescopic sight, serial no. 82458, aluminium and green polymer thumbhole stock with bipod and rear mounted monopod, adjustable buttplate, sling swivels, in its steel transit case with two magazines

Provenance: We have kindly been supplied with the following information regarding the rifle:

"Accuracy International L96A1 PM Variant.

This rifle was supplied direct to Durham Constabulary by Accuracy International in 1987 and was the first AI rifle to be used by Durham Police.
It was used operationally by Durham Police Firearms Department for six years and though in good condition does bear some minor marks of operational use.
In 1993 the rifle was given to the Durham Constabulary Gun Club where it was used sporadically in the following years among the gun clubs good selection of other modern sniper type rifles.
For the past twelve years at least, it has laid dormant and unused apart from its recent test firing and functionality checks prior to being offered for sale complete with original transport chest, bipod, Schmidt & Bender scope and two magazines.
The PM variant was supplied only to U.K. Police Forces and only 12 others have ever been released into public hands and due to a change in Police ACPO guidelines no further Police Firearms can be sold or supplied into public ownership.
This is a unique opportunity to acquire an extremely rare classic British Police Sniper Rifle in original condition and specification"

It is in nice condition. Been for sale elsewhere for over 15 months now at £20k or near offers, so probably why it's now up for auction.

If it goes for the £16k upper estimate it's going to cost the buyer £20k with the auction premium anyway......

At the current exchange rate GBP-Aus $20,000GBP = $32,605.12/Au + commission & getting it to Aus would see the thick end of 38-40K if I had that sort of money I would buy a 600NE Purdey the last consecutive pair I saw for sale some 6 years ago were advertised for $425,000 US dollars.........................yes they along with Holland & Holland make/made very tidy NE rifles

Was this the one with 'Bolt Open Classics'?

I think they will be lucky to get 5 figures at Auction.

In 2010 I had one on loan from Donnington. The label read "small arms attractive" with a value of £1029.80p.
At the same time another loan a 40mm GMG was valued at £15,720.90p.

It's interesting that this isn't marked L96A1, I have one that has the same providence, but different Police Force made in 1989 but marked L96A1

Most of those ex Police ones just have ACCURACY INTERNATIONAL down the left hand side, because they were AI Precision Marksman Rifles (PM) hence the serial number designation.

Later ones (yours being 89) utilised L96 actions, probably because that's what was on the shelf, but will have a PM serial number. I'm guessing your serial number is 89PMXXXX

This is just an early Police rifle. Hence the Mags are one offs and it won't accept L96 Mags.
