Pics would be priceless, then Peter or a couple others can tell you exactly what it is.

The "large cone" is the main (tapered) body of the chamber.
NOT to be confused with the "short cone" which is part of the "throat / leade" at the front of the chamber.
I don't have anything on that particular gauge close at hand, but, I suspect it is part of a set used to gauge wear / eccentricities etc. in rifle and machine-gun barrels.
Any advances?

Post the number on the gauge.
I have a copy of the master index of all the gauges from the Lee Enfield, Portive, Vickers and up
Both manufacture and field inspection gauges.[COLOR="black"]

The only reference I have to a large cone gauge is SM417; GAUGE, plug, large cone No4 and this is used in conjunction with SM387; GAUGE, slip, 0.1" No1. One without the other is useless. Youy will have to come up with the SM number on your gauge. In any case, if your rifle accepts the SM417 and SM387, then it's bad news as the body is worn out!

hi Peter
the SM number is 417 what are u actually measuring on the rifle and why is the block with 6 on it removable
regards alex

You are measuring the wear in the body relative to the CHAMBER. This is a BASE workshop standard. This is in addition to measuring CHS where the measurement is taken from the locking shoulders to the rear end of the barrel. I'm not psychic so can't comment on what I can't see.
