Unfortunately, not a lot is know about the use of the Liberator pistol since these guns were made under great secrecy for the OSS. Distribution was probably through them. I also doubt that Ike would have been involved in the decision to use them. The question is really how much bang do I get from the use of the pistol if it takes up space in an aircraft when I can be supplying more effective weapons like the Sten MKII, or .38 Colt or S&W Revolvers. The other problem is takes a lot of nerve to walk directly up to a well armed, trained enemy soldier (who is usually not alone) and kill him with a single shot smooth bore pistol. A few Liberators were probably given out as a "last shot" weapon or gifts (probably just to get rid of them.) I have read that in the Philippines the local guerillas used them to great effect. The Philippine guerillas would also wear the dead Japanese soldier's uniform whom they killed as a badge of honor and bravery. Needless to say they were forced to take them off after the US started to re-occupy the Philippines for fear of the local guerillas being mistaken for Japanese soldiers.
As with any weapon dreamed up by a headquarters staff bears no sense of reality in the operational field environment.
Cheers
