Bullet test

From my previous post I am looking at purchasing a M1 carbine. The seller does not have the TE and ME gauges. He sent me a photo of the "bullet test" with the bullet inserted into the barrel at the muzzle. The bullet goes in a stops just before where it is seated in the brass. Does this indicate excessive wear? Thanks in advance

Depends on the Ogive of the projectile if the bullet is seated in the case so it is just the start of the ogive that contacts the muzzle then it may not give a true indication of ME it really is a bush hack, if your really keen on the rifle ask them if they could get it to a gunsmith with a TE/ME gauges or post a pic here and see what the forum says over all pictures and close ups of the action receiver muzzle etc always helps with a fair estimation.
But as always the experts here without handling the rifle can only go on what they see in the pictures.

Don't concern yourself about TE in a carbine. It is for all practical purposes nonexistent. I've only seen one that had any measurable amount. The ammo just isn't hot enough to cause damage. The other thing about ME is that many carbines have been counter-bored. If they swallow a bullet clear to the case rim, the barrel has most likely been counter-bored and you can't get a good reading. And one other thing, throat gauges for a carbine are exceptionally rare. It is almost impossible to find one so it is unlikely that you can find a gunsmith who has one. They just aren't needed.

And the round to use to show any wear should be a 30-06 with the M2 150 gr. FMJ bullet.

If he was using a GI Carbine round, that's about right for a barrel in good shape. Even if it goes to the point of just touching the brass, it should still be OK. - Bob

Looks pretty good to me. I bought my first carbine for around that price.
I'd take the full $700 then when I got there ask if he'd take $650.
It NEVER hurts to ask .

That extra $50 would buy a nice pile of ammo!

The 30 carbine round is NOT correct to show wear in a carbine barrel. M2-30-06 show approximately what a muzzle gauge will show. The picture of the muzzle shown looks like it has been counter bored a small amount so it will increase accuracy. It might be the photo but it looks like it.

Yeah, I think he mentioned that in the other thread. I wonder if it's Arlington ORD? If he doesn't have GI M2 Ball on hand, he can still get an idea with the carbine round - that's what I was getting at. It looks like a bit of the bullet is showing in pics 4-6. - Bob

A friend called to tell me a co-worker of his was offering up a Import S'G' around their job site. His best offer at the time was $250. I had my friend pay him $300 and he brought it up a couple weeks later as he was here for vacation, I gave him his $300 plus a finders fee of $100, so I have $400 in this one with 5 or 6 mags.

After checking with a M2 round, I wasn't expecting much from it. Seen it has a CAST hammer and 22 coil hammer spring.... feels like a 15lb pull ! Very First Cast Hammer I've ever used.
Side Thought: I wonder how these Cast hammers would hold up in -15 or -20 F cold weather ??
Fooled around on my hold and twitching the rear sight on the 3-25 yards targets.
After moving down to the 50 yard it wasn't until I shot at the last... on the left #3 target that I pulled my hold down and seen things improve.
This ole beater eats that M2 but stays pretty consistent, once you figure out your hold. To be honest I was happy with it's accuracy and a calming feeling shooting it knowing it was something I could beat on.
