A bit of Bondo and some spray paint would make it an OK mantle piece.
Poor thing! No gun deserves this treatment.
The wood is OK or else I’d say it was in a fire.

Looks like it spent a few years down the left hand hole of a two seater outhouse. Or in the bottom of a horse trough. Or up in a hayloft. Poor thing!

Nice... I bet it hung over a fireplace and the soot and smoke was allowed to accumulate. Then, after grandpa died it was looked at for the first time in 60 years. Too bad...but nothing brings out true talent like a hopeless case. Get at 'Er...

Jim,
Not a project for me. It’s just too far gone, unfortunately. If it had come in better than the pictures showed, I’d probably hang on to it.
I did quite well on the other two guns though. An Arisaka
with the quick detach sling (which is apparently quite valuable by itself) and a martially marked Stevens 620.
Not a dam buster auction for me but a success nevertheless! Keeps me rolling to the next one. I have a great 1903 coming in on Saturday I’ll have to get posted. Watch for that one!

I think it was hanging over a fireplace. We repaired a few that looked exactly like that. Soot does that and that gun is prime for a hanger... Anyway, not a digup. No way the wood would look that good.

If it’s any consolation (it is to me) the bore is also toast. It would be pretty heartbreaking if the outside looked like this and the bore was pristine.
