I was looking at the picture and I am pretty sure that there is a shovel on the back of the knapsack.

He'll dig a bigger and quicker hole with his tin lid than with that diddy little shovel.

Dad was with the 40th Inf. in the Pacific, he told me he carried the pick rather than the shovel, he would break the ground with the pick and scoop it with his helmet, said he could get low fast. On Leyte one of his squad mates stole the pick, dad said a quick rifle butt to the chest facilitated quick return of the missing item.
