New here, I have some questions people maybe ablle to help with
I have an M1
Carbine rifle the belongs to a gentleman who will likely die in the next few months. I am a gun dealer but hardly knowledgeable in old guns. I told him I would get a valid estimate on his rifle before buying selling it online. He told me he is not worried about the money but does not want his wife to deal with this stuff. He said this rifle belonged to his father who was a fur trapper filling contracts for the US government when or during WW2 Sometime after the war he was given this rifle from someone in the government as a gift for his work. He does not know who or what the person. He said it is a Saginaw Gear Prime rifle. I have only started reading up on this and I'm more confused now than 5 hours ago when I started. I will get some photos and figure out how to post them. For now, I will post what I see. The receiver says Saginaw S'G' the Sn is 1800XXX the barrel says Buffalo Arms 6-1943 has a P. There is a flaming bomb under the date. the front band is a UI and the rear part that holds the receiver is a (w) the wood has no marks on the outside but looks like it may have a low spot that could have been sanding down markings. the area where the sling goes into the stock opposite to the oiler area, it looks like there is an (o , s and backward 4 ) The bolt hold back looks like a door with a round top, there is an S on the sight, I have not removed the wood yet. The Magazines have markings too but I don't have them with me. Tomorrow.

I'm no expert Mike, being a somewhat recent convert to all things M1
Carbine.
But this example appears to be a very nice and desirable Carbine with correct early features.
Type 1 barrel band.
Narrow slot woodwork
Two rivet handguards
Simple flip back sight
Push button safety
The only early feature I don't see is the 'I' cut butt slot, but that was only on the very early rifles I think...
All the above suggests a 'highly' desirable Carbine.
The experts will be along soon.....

While all parts appear USGI to me, some things I see that look out of place for this S'G':
- Round bolt with no wear - too late for this rifle
- S~ flip sight - could be mistaken but not aware of this marking used on S'G'
- w Winchester recoil plate - wear not consistent and not aware of w plate usage on S'G'
- UI band - not aware of usage on S'G'
- type 1 deep groove handguard
Just my first pass observations, it doesn't appear to be an "Original as-manufactured" rifle.

You took some really good pictures! Like Mr.Clark303, I am also very new to M1
carbines. I concur with GotSnlB28 with his assessment, especially the replacement bolt (I believe it should have had a flat bolt). I also believe you are correct that the stock has been sanded. It is a nice "high wood" stock but it is missing the cartouche stamping. Look around the butt plate. If the edge of the plate and the surface of the stock have a height difference where the wood is lower than the plate edge, then you have a sanded stock.
The bad news is is appears to be a "parts" gun and not all original.
The good news is that it is an M1 carbine and still worth some good dollars in today's market. In my opinion, at California gun shows, you would see it priced around $1,200 and actually sell for around a $1,000 once you started pointing out its issues. It should be a great shooter for someone. Make sure you find it a good home!

Would love to see a left side rear picture of the receiver out of the stock and also left side and top down pictures of the front sight.

Thanks for that! It does appear the band and barrel have been together for a while.

I've got one about like it. I haven't checked to see if S'G' ever received any Winchester recoil plates as transfers, but agree that one doesn't match the receiver. I think the date on the barrel reads 6-1943, which is about right. Does the safety have any markings? - mine doesn't. Check the RH side of the rear sight base for markings, mine is B-IP - most all flip sights will have the "s" on the left side. The handguard will probably be stamped RSG like the stock. Would like to see a pic of the buttplate, too - it may have have markings on the edge. Look for markings on the mag catch along the front. I too, would like to see pics of the action out of the stock. - Bob
