Okay, Jim, that was funny! Ray - please don't take the attitude of 'accept it as it is or go away'. That's a negative response that won't help anything. Who knows? We may come up with a way of making it more interesting. But, I do agree that the carbine forum has 'matured' as all forums do, and the action slows down as 'newbies' ask the same old questions over and over. A forum peaks after a few years as the regular readers get more and more educated by the experienced collectors. Since we are the first generation of Internet users, we are basically writing the book on how (and how not) to do things here, and experiencing these particular problems for the first time in history. I don't know why some forums survive the peak and some don't, but I think we all agree that this one has suffered since the move. Obviously, it's up to us to do something about it. I have thought about the possibility of breaking it up into sub-forums like so many other boards, but short of re-engineering this board (which is probably not going to happen) I really don't have any suggestions. If you will go to the m1911.org forum, you will find one that remains vibrant and is easy to use to quickly find new posts, etc. As is typical, several extremely experienced collectors 'rule' there, but are also very free with their knowledge. Talk about alive, check out AR15.com - it also includes the AK-47. If you long for the wild west saloon, there you have it. Well, nothing to do but keep checking in and posting. It will either come to life or it won't.

Good thoughts. sorry if my posts seemed negative but guess I was just resonding to the negative posts about the forum which actually had been started by your "Bored With This Board" post. I check this forum about every day and you mentioned that it's been so long since you did that you forgot how to check in so I guess I kind of took offense to someone who don't participte in the forum anymore knocking it.
But I'm happy that you are again participating and in a very positive way and you are right negative responses don't help anything, Ray

This is different, but well policed
The old board for carbines was sometimes tedious as one person after another proclaimed a part or carbine to be a fake when it might in fact be perfectly legitimate. That's what stuck out in my mind; it was just opinions and bad guesses. A very, very few were really knowledgeable on the subject, Brian being my pick for definitive expert. The 1911 board is a wonder with guys like Johnny Peppers handing out gems of knowledge; he's amazing. And on the 1903 site, Mr Beard speaks with authority. This board was always hostile to opinions not shared, the bad guessers didn't like being told they might be wrong. The strict behavior policies have taken some of this hostility away. I've learned a lot by visiting here, I vividly recall looking over my Winchester and missing most of the keys to identification. In the space of a few years, I discovered that it is most likely an original example. Time well spent, but sometimes very tedious when I'd post a very good cartouche that is common and in line with the rest of the indicators and then have a so-called expert tell me it was a fake. The person who knows told me it wasn't.

I mainly lurk on the M-1 and 03 boards... I def. agree the new format does not have as much off-the-wall stuff from Bubba Boofaw in Bugtussel. "I hav this hyar ol rifel gun I was give after I moowwed this hyar ledy's yard..." and just in general it is more sedate... fewer comments, less aggressive in your face stuff. I think registration ran off the idiot fringe which in its way was entertaining...

This is probably the main difference that many miss. They want to jump to what Expert Z has to say and skip the others, IMHO.
Not many will go to the Search as suggested above. We just need to get used to this format....
