what No4 did I buy?
Good day,
Picked up my No4mkT a couple of weeks ago really did not have time to look or fiddle with it other than taking the scope off and shipping it to BDL. She really is not as good as described so a little work is in order first off the wood. Got a good crack in the buttstock its coming off and going into a special box as it is well cartouched bottom of buttstock symbol of a star, a large V SL N 74 this all being in a verticle line. I have new wood and a cheek piece coming from Numrich. the base of the rifle say M47 C,, 1944,, 38***,, TR also in verticle order. The side of the action says No4MkI T Good old ENGLAND on the top of the receiver. So who made this girl really am computer illiterate I have some books coming but am in the dark. Also the top of the forestock rattles normal? Does something need to be tightened and or shimmed none the less i have wood coming for it also.
Litterally the day after this rig showed up the scope went off to BDL, thanks Doug they are great folks to deal with. For those of you looking to buy a No4MkT if you go the quasi refurb way your going to pay and if you get a minty one your going to pay. Scope servicing can go from $400.00 US and I am sure skies the limit. so far all my scope requires is the rear glass needs to be re glued and the turrets need cleaning.
Really getting to the urge to hit some paper with this old cougar,

If I were you, I'd not change ANY wood. The butt crack can be fixed easily. Get a syringe and inject superglue into the crack. It will be fine.
The handguards can be shimmed with a little card stock under the bands if it really bothers you.

I would choose a glue for its invisible qualities ie cabinet or organic (horse glue) over weather proof or strengh. You probably won't be stuck in a hide being rained on for days at a time. The crack is longitudinale I'm guessing so the cabinet glue should be plenty strong . To properly glue anything is not a matter of just slopping a bunch of glue on and walking away. Do your home work . Each glue requires it own techniqe.(slight presser, heat, working times etc.) It is very important to do each and every step properly.

Advisory Panel
By the book, the barrel should rest on the front, bottom of the forestock, and require 3 to 7 pounds to lift up. When released, it should return to the bottom center. If lifted up and right, or up and left, it should also return to the bottom center.
Properly bedded, and meeting these specs, the barrel may rattle a bit if the gun is shaken around.
If the barrel is floatind in the wood, and/or resting into the left or right of the rifle, that is another story. Bedding an Enfield is an art, and not to be entered into lightly.
Many shooters would solid bed the barrels. There are claims as to improving the accuracy of the rifle, but in all the years the 4T (and the no4s and the Cno7s for that matter) have served, and continue to serve in military service, the origional standards still stand.
