Spare Parts, or What breaks??
On another forum some folk are posting about recommended spare parts for various modern battle rifles. This got me thinking: They are not making M1 Carbines anymore. What spare parts should I have to be sure that my kids and grandkids will still be able to shoot my Carbines.
Springs are a no brainier. I have already had to replace a bunch of magazine, ejector and recoil springs.
Would a few extractors be a useful addition to my spare parts box? I have already started to bag, and mark carefully the spare parts I am collecting. I do think it interesting that the much maligned Carbine seems to have a greater reliability than some modern battle rifles.

Good thinking for down the road,
I would want extra bolts, bolt parts and slides stashed away for future use.

It depends on how much money you want to spend on parts the you may or may not never use. I have never had a extractor break, but on a couple of carbines I bought on the internet they came with broken extractor hooks.
Min. parts, Bolt tool, extractors, ext. spring and plunger. Cost $60
If you want to spend a little more then, firing pin, T3 ejector assembley. Cost $18.
On the subject of extra bolts, Just my opinion. But I believe it will last a life time unless you run into some bad ammo, powder over charge and or over pressure issue.
As Charlie pointed out there is a very small chance your slide could break.
Every one has their own must have extra parts list, but it does come down to how much you want to spend.

A spare bolt would be good to have.

Already have the bolt tool. If I got a complete spare bolt I would have spare firing pin, extrator, bolt and ejector. Another extractor sounds good also.

+1, especially if you plan on shooting Wolf steel cased ammo.

I carried an M-2 in Viet Nam 1968 and in full auto never broke a bolt. And I shot plenty through the gun. But I have seen others break bolts.
Even if you get an assembeld bolt, I would pick up 1 or 2 extractors, and remember the spring and plungers. Most likely if you lose the extractor at the range you will also lose the spring and plunger.
A Inland complete bolt in average condition is about $50-60. I would guess $4 max for a spring and plunger, about $10-11 for an unmarked extractor. $15 should get you all three. Ejector and spring $3-4.
$30-35 for a bolt tool.
