carbine ID
just received the carbine from CMP
, and it looks like someone somewhere painted the stock black? Or is this just oil buildup? anyway, it is stamped AAL with a worn P at the handle underside, and the FAT72 in a box on the stock. What does this mean? Also, and 11/42 stamped barrel. can you guys give me a heads up on this? thanks

Painted stock.....probably just old oil and grime build up. Gas cleans these off pretty well...use safely.
AAL stamp....I think that would be the Augusta Arsenal re-build stamp with the letter L being the inspector.
Worn P... if in a circle on the bottom of the pistol grip could be a factory proof stamp. Could also just be a inspection stamp.
The FAT stamp stands for the Italian
army...I don't recall the proper name. Fabrico...something.
Can you see any markings in the slingwell? To tell if you have USGI issue stock?
You might have a Italian stock on your hands.
What type of maker is your carbine?
Pictures are a 'NEW' requirement here ;-)

i think this is a GI stock, I just discovered a crossed cannon cartouche on the right side of the rifle near the butt. this looks like walnut for the stock, i don 't think this is a hardwood stock.

WE can't ID your carbine till you at least post the serial number. Tell us what the major parts have for markings on them too.

duggaboy,
Sounds like you scored a first serial block Underwood. Underwoods first assigned serial number block started at 1,350,000 and ended with 1,449,999. The 11-42 barrel may very well be the original barrel to this receiver. The SI marked bayonet band would have been added during a late or post WWII re-build. Not sure if the R marked front sight would have been original...I don't think so. The OI in the slingwell stands for the stock maker Overton and made for a Inland. The punch marks found on the receiver, bolt and other areas were hardness tests.

P.S. It would be a walnut stock.

For what it is worth Walnut is a hardwood thus if you have a Walnut stock it is a hardwood stock. Common woods used other then Walnut were Birch and Cherry which are both hardwoods as well.
