It is for only the Union soldiers. If sombody could find a Southern one. I would appreciate it. My family lost some on both sides.

From what I could research, most information was correct from volunteer "tombstone readers".

I did find the soldier that I have the coffin plate on but according the the National Park Service whom I contacted about Civil War Mortuary practices, they said," Unusual to find a plate like I have. If family could afford embalming, the soldier was usually placed in a wooden box and a ID tag attached or the name was painted on. Soldier usually had charcoal placed around him to hold down any odor"

My soldier never made it home. Buried in Virginia.

The interesting thing about this site is the miscellaneous information that is provided with many of the names. Not only can you find info on wounds or service records but some list desertions with the deserter being back on the line within a few days. One guy was listed as having chronic diarrhea for the rest of his life due to an illness contracted during the war. Ouch!!!

Last night, I talked with Bruce Fail, owner of the site. He says that only about 550,000 Northern Vets are there and those are because of volunteers. There may have been up to 4 million CW vets that are buried somewhere.Mostly around soldiers and sailors homes.

I just sent him images of 4 head stones of CW vets that I had taken images of in a small rural cem. There is also an image of a Rev. War soldier

Bruce would like help with more CW headstones. Next time you or we are out at a cem, take a digital camera a shoot the stones you find and send them to Bruce. He must be contacted before sending though.

Just my a strange coincidence I was in one of my old files this morning and saw about twenty photos of Civil War headstones I took in Vicksburg, MS a few years ago.

You could also contact Bruce on Tuesday (Mon.holiday?) and tell him what you have. Maybe you can join in the Natl. Graves Registry and snap images on your free time? Great way to remember the Civil War Vets.

Theres a mass grave of Confederate dead not far from here. Many years after the war a monument was raised there for them with the known number of dead and some other information.
This was near the scene of intense combat with heavy casualties on both sides. Cannon balls were found lodged in the walls of some old houses near here during restorations.
When I next visit the site I'll try to get photos of the monument and copy down the information on the stones.

Thanks. Rev. War soldiers are good also as the site shares with a Rev. War group. About where is that Confederate Monument.? Reading books is not the same as knowing some thing more personal about the site.
