PURCHASE ADVICE: YUGO SKS Welded on muzzle break

I have been looking for a Yugo ADVICE: YUGO SKS which are hard to come by here in Califonia because you can not own one with a Grenade Launcher. They get around this by either drilling holes in the launcher to make it into a muzzle break, replace it with a fabricated Muzzle Brake, or a solid chunk of metal to keep it 922R compliant.

The one I found they took a bit further, rather then screw the new Muzzle Brake on and repin it, they partially welded it in place, maybe 40%~50% around the barrel. (see pictures below)

I'm torn on this one I have been searching for a Yugo SKS for a while, this one is $500.00, since I can't own a grenade launcher in CA, it doesn't bother me to have a muzzle break as long as everything else is there. What worries me is the welding of it to the barrel, this has had to have compromised the metal, you can see that the weld is well done, meaning the weld is deep. Don't know if it worth $500.00 with the weld either.

Would love to hear your thoughts as a point of reference Yugo go for $700.00 to $1200.00 here in California.

I can actually speak from experience with this one...when we did something like that here it in fact caused the barrel to banana towards the weld. It was a sight that was welded onto a 740 Remington and the barrel took a decided upward curve so it required straightening after. That one may shoot downward now.

Jim, Thanks for the information and that would make sense. I'm guessing this is common here in California. I found a post from Aragorn243 (Steve) where he had a SKS welded like the one may buy. I've been researching and it seems this is supposed to be done by California law? I'm not sure because a show I go to two years ago, I should have bought it then, was moding the by tuning down the grenade launcher and repining them, no welds, so I'm not sure.

How about just cutting it off? I think that's the route I'd go.

If you can fold the bayonet up and lock it in place, I would go for it at $500.

My friend has a Yugo with a welded muzzle brake and he can fold up and lock the bayonet in place.

Is it correct for a Yugo? Not really, but you still have a great gun and when the California laws change, I believe you can have a good gunsmith remove it.

One can only dream I'm going to pick the rifle up next Saturday. I was going to go today but when I went to get my COE paperwork I notice my COE had expired.

How about just cutting it off? I think that's the route I'd go.

I would change to the C&R status of the rifle if I went that route.

I have one of these. We just shot it at 300 yards and with GECO ammo, it was darn accurate, first shot from a cold barrel was an X at 3:00! It did have a tendency to string a bit, not really sure if it was the rifle as two newbies were shooting it. Funny story, I bought it from a friend and the FFL guy calls me months later. Doesn't want to talk on the phone but wants to meet me at a gas station. OK guy needs cash, has a deal for me, whats up? Anyway long story is he mis-remembered the rifle and thought he did all the paperwork on a M59/66 WITH a grenade launcher. Was sure he was going to loose everything, Feds were on their way etc. Calmed him down and showed him pics and that everything was above board. I just had to put a Murry's gas diverter valve on mine as it was short stroking. Also a spring firing pin and a trigger job. Still too heavy and I doubt I'm going to stick someone rather than shoot them, but as a 10 shot legal semi-auto with plenty of punch, I'm keeping it.

Yes, you can legally purchase or transfer the Type 59's in California. They need to be pretty much original with a standard stock (no aftermarket pistol grip) and standard 10-round magazine.

Are standard Type 59 SKS's ie Chinese/Russian allowed and available in CA???

I already have two Russan and three Chinese so I was looking for a Yugo or Romanian, (would never be able to afford a North Korean). Yes, unmodified you can own the Chinese and Russian. For the Yugo you need to have the grande launcher removed and something, like a break, welded in place.
