Thorin, because the carbines CAI marked, with receiver ground, I wouldnt bother trying to find a legit UEF stock, leave it as it is, as a shooter, unless you paid a premium for supposedly good wood?

First, I'll accept BrianQ's conclusion that the marking is a fake; while that doesn't necessarily mean the stock isn't an Underwood, it certainly makes it suspect. I'll post a picture of the sling well "P-U" marking later for any opinions.
Secondly, I paid $75 for the stock and handguard, so I'm not sure that I would do any better with either a generic M1 stock or a correct Underwood stock. I had to get rid of the cruddy M2 stock, it looked like the wood was beginning to rot.
Third, the reason I bought this carbine was because I wanted an early configured M1 that I could handle without worrying that I would hurt an original early carbine, and the price was right. My final outlay will be around $350 or less for everything.
I will, however, go back to the individual I bought the stock from to discuss the matter.

Here are pictures of the sling well marking and the handguard marking. Would appreciate knowing if these are legit.
Thanks,

My P-U stock from the CMP (still leaking grease months later) has two parallel rows of overlapping circular stampings (each one about 1/2" in diameter) marching down the slingwell ramp. Not sure what they are from but I've seen them on several other P-U stocks. Your handguard looks pretty much like mine.
