My choice is a 40 cal Beretta 96 (Brigadier) with Crimson Trace laser sights. Just point the red dot, no aiming necessary. Birthday present from my dear wife several years ago.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. I have to say I have A Berreta 1201 FP with surefire light and pistol grip. (think Benelli M1) and a Glock .45 handy for Zombie attacks.
The AR is now my full time across the course rifle and really the M1 carbine,M1,M1Aicon,1903,1917. Just sit in the safe except for when they are fired in their name- sake matches either local or at Perry.
Once or twice a year the girlfriend shoots a AR,AK, M1 carbine and my Berreta 92.
The carbines are my favorite guns, they just don't fit in with my working guns. I have a near new mostly original bring back IBM I shoot at Perry, I have a CMPicon Win service grade my Dad or girlfriend shoot once in a while. All the other carbines got pulled down, photographed, cleaned there story and parts breakdown logged in a book, and in the safe they went never to see light again.

    Talking Carbine

I like the carbine for home defense. The ARs tend to over penetrate. A 110 grain SP or HP from a carbine is lethal at under 50 or 100 yards. It also intimidates more than a pistol. I ran a car load of goblins off my property one night (2 or 3 AM) by stepping out on my porch with an M1icon with (2) 30 rounders taped together. They did not want to stay and play. I stepped out with carbine at high port and said "Hello boys!" In their haste to depart, they did cheap body work on the car on the boulders lining my driveway in their haste to depart with their lights off!

For me it's a Browning A5, no plug and alternate 00 buck and #4 shot. Also ruger 9mm with hi cap mag and hollow points.

I understand if you think the AR is unweildy inside (and it can be for those not accustomed to training indoors in a CQ environment), but a .223/5.56 loaded with appropriate ammo, such as the excellent Hornady TAP round actually penetrates LESS than most handgun ammo. LE tactical units have been using this system for years now with no over-penetration issues. The little bullet pretty much fragments into nothing on impact. If my memory serves me correctly, the 55 gr TAP round penetrates about 7" in ballistic gelatin....with a devastating come like dispersion of mini-shrapnel.

The go-to guns at our house are 9mm Glocks and 2 AR mid-length carbines.
Pistol ammo is Corbon for him and Fed 9mm Classic for her . AR ammo is Prvi 75 gn match HP.
Still , I would rather have an SG M1Carbine from CMPicon ( with light ) than a cheap lower tier AR.
Some info on the M1icon Carbine as a personal defense weapon:

    Talking Cqb

I've trained (and been a trainer)in CQB since the early 70s with everything from UZI, MP5, XM177E2, M16A1, M1icon and M2 carbine, assorted 12 gauges, more types of handgun than you can count, and a few others.

A shorty AR is nice and tacticool, but I know up close the carbine works, and feels right too. But, whatever works for you.....

    Different tools...

for different jobs. In my house at night....M3A1 grease gun with 30rd mag FMJ and a supressor. Small and handy , large mag capasity for more than one , suppressor so you don't go blind nor deaf and to reduce the speed of the bullet to limit penatration and to keep bad guy #2 in the front room from knowing his buddy just got it. Of course I live in a house surrounded on three sides by a 6 foot brick fence and on the fourth by garages and four cars to the next house. Chris

    sigh

Ah, to live in a class 3 state! I actually fired an M3 (without the cocking lever) one time. The 400-450 RPM actually made it very controllable. Kinda of a "thunka, thunka, thunka" feeling and sound.

The SO I was on in the mid to late70s had a greasegun, several Thompsons, and even an MP38 in the armory. Took them out to the range for "Fam-fire". Thompson was sweet, but damn heavy with the L drum. We even had a C, but didn't use it. Those were the days....

It all depends on where we fall asleep as to what we grab up.(mama and I are gettin bad about fallin asleep in our recliners lately). Right beside my recliner is a Ruger SR9 stoked with Double Tap 147 grain +p hollow points. Mama keeps a Rossi 357 snubbie with 125grain JHP's beside her. Behind her chair is "Betsy" , her Mossberg Persuader loaded with Fereral LE Hydrashok full power hollow point slugs...she is fond of that shotty! . But closest to the door is either the Saiga 7.62x39, and my old Universal Stainless Steel carbine loaded with soft points. That ole' Universal may not be mil-spec, but is one of the most accurate carbines I have ever owned!
Did I mention that it isn't safe to break into our house?
