Charlie, It's a bodge, but it WAS done in service. You can cut a strip of thin card, sufficient to go round the bottom section of the hand guard lips. (The section that sits inside the handguard ring, around the barrel. This 'Packing' will take up the looseness you have, without having to modify or repair anything! Easy & quick to effect. You will be amazed at how it WILL eliminate any play in your handguards!

Ah, Mr Clarke, sorry to sound contrary but the REAL point is not what it LOOKS like or whether it is a bit of a hybrid or a mongrel or whether it was licensed or whether you like or don't like the look of it or whether this that and the other and......... It's this. Does it work? Does it do what they wanted? Was it a reliable workhorse? Did it last the course? Did it out-live the UK version? And the answer is.................. I'll let you answer that. In case you are stuck I'll give you a clue. The answer starts with the letter 'Y' and has three letters.
If you give a squaddie anywhere in the world, a rifle that is reliable, accurate and trouble free he won't ask for anything else. I know - I've been there
And something else too............. Whoever said our rifle was an inch pattern? Just get your thread gauge out. Imperial measure.......... Just get your vernier calipers out

Evening Peter,
You make a sound point, I am not commenting on the function of the Indian fal though, just its rather "fit by eye" lack of interchangeability, I wouldn't doubt that it was/is a thoroughly reliable rifle, like all fals are, on the point of length of service, SMLE's can still be seen in the hands of Police officers in the backwaters of India.....the 1960's fal is practically brand new in comparison!
I would say though, compare an L1 and the S1 side by side if you get the chance, they make for an interesting comparison, especially to a highly qualified chap like yourself.
Bit like comparing Kellogs to Tesco Value flakes, both fill you up in the morning, but I know which one I would rather have for breakfast!

The Sten gun didn't look good either. But you can only kill a man so dead no matter what you've got!
