Bubba, yours is almost a twin to my 5,701,XXX, except yours has round bolt and type V slide! Why refinish it. It is still good shape (a little better than mine, in fact), but has an honest, "Been there, done that" look!

To me, it looks like the owner wire brushed it. You can see brush marks on top of the barrel over gas housing, and on the left side of the band, and on other parts. If the finish was just light with wear, I would not refinish it.
I have found someone to refinish it. So I'll give it a try.

The only thing to me that looks bad is the trigger housing which you won't see that much off. I mean a Winchester round bolt is worth 150 to maybe 200. The barrel band is near or in that same area and their value is going to be killed if refinished. There are other parts on the rifle that wil be in the same boat too. Having said that, post some pictures when it's done. That way we can see how close it is to the correct Winchester finish you are looking for.

The biggest concern I have in refinishing it is with new looking metal, the stock will have to be near prefect. With a used stock the metal will not look right. Well there is a first for everything.

The carbine was refinished by a board member here. I can't thank him enough for all the time and effort, not to mention miles, he put into saving this carbine.
The carbine was disassembled completely, then refinished, and reassembled. Even the stripped barrel was removed from the receiver. The gas nut and piston are in the white. The chamber is in the white. Bolt, pins and guides are blued. Proof punches and rear sight stakes are in the white. The only part not disassembled was the rear sight.

The best part is all I paid was a few junk Rock-Ola parts I had laying around. Well several, not a few, parts for a late six million that he was looking for. I may even get a few $ back. You can't beat that. I have several original 5.7 Winchesters and other than the finish looking fresher, it looks the same color.
This rifle came with a type 3 push safety with no "EW" but has the usual Winchester saw cuts. I could have sent one with the "EW" to be refinished and used it, but I wanted it to have all the original parts it came with.
