I thought the Armalon project had a load of No 53 scopes to use as the basis for making up No 32 scope lookalikes - what's the difference between the No 42 and the No 53, if I may be naive?

No42 uses large diameter lenses that fit directly into the tube. Liable to damage easily. See Surpmils leader re the No42 being offered in France
for a good example of damaged ocular lenses. But if they're not damage, can be used in No32 Mk1 and early Mk2 telescopes according to the blurb on Ebay
The No53 uses ocular lenses in a self contained cell. Less prone to damage. Can be used in late Mk2's and all Mk3's. Not strictly true - but if the threads match, OK if not, chase with needle file on a lathe to adjust.
