M-1 Garand timing

My 7.62 has to be palmed closed at times. Not regularly, it's just the clip tension and having my extended fingers down along the op handle that slows it's release...so it doesn't have as much momentum on release. It doesn't bother me and doesn't present a dangerous condition for the rifle...

Many Garands need to be palmed home. John C. Garand filmed a video demonstrating the weapon and had to palm home every round he put in the rifle.

For what its worth, the accelerator inside the op rod catch, has a major effect upon the op rod timing function, as it contacts the cam tip of the bullet guide.
According to Kuhnhausen, the accellerator may be deleted entirely.

So I understand clearly, good timing means,, with everything being neutral, clip tension, parts in spec, etc, etc. when seating the clip it locks the clip and releases the OP rod at about the same time and it's free to return to battery under spring tension alone.
Correct??

No, for some reason, many Garands have to have the first round run into the chamber with the palm on the op rod handle. That is what I spoke of before. Check out John Garand operating the rifle at 2:59 on this video.

But I still don't understand what Timing is on the Garand, that is the knowledge I seek.

You understand it , WarPig . Bob was just pointing out that some need a helping hand to close even though it is timed right . If the bolt is released too early , it can strike the back of the clip and jam up the reload or at least make it harder than normal. Too late and it may not release at all .
