the guy I got it from was in Montana I figured the notches on the hand guard were for dead deer not huns. so it probably was a pine needle. I kind of got the feeling that someone brought this rifle home around 1908 that's why it it has never been missed with

I took it off the CMP forum because I was not getting any interest in it. And put it on gun broker. I do not like selling it but I am getting older and my wife does not want to mess with my collection if I kick the bucket. However; We agreed I would keep one low number and one high number and one garand. the problem is I have one other low number a early rock island with a AV 18 barrel and a PODD stamp on the stock. that I want to keep. I know it does not make much sense to keep the mix master and get rid of the really rare collectable rifle but I love that Rock go figure

Like you, I have also come to the conclusion that maybe I should thin my accumulation that I have been gathering since 1971. When I told my son I will probably start thinning the herd and he hit the roof. He said that this was HIS inheritance. He then sarcastically said "Well, what if I take you out?"
"Well then," said I " your mom inherits them and sells them for cash and you won't get a sniff."

I got an email that the rear sight was wrong that it is a later one. I do not think so, Could someone knowledgeable look at the pics and give me an opinion is the rear sight is correct

I wouldn't worry about it. There's still a couple guys I'm expecting to see here to give you clear info, that haven't shown up. They won't PM you, they'll speak in clear...because they know for sure.

Can you get a clear picture of your rear sight. Straight down from above ... no angle, side or oblique pictures.
That should clear up any questions.

Looking at Brophy's book, your sight appears to be an early sight for the 30.06 but I am no expert. Maybe John Beard or RTL could chime in.
Strange, your drift slide does appear to be cut off on the bottom (no peephole).
Your knurled knobs (say that 5 times fast without sounding perverted) appear to be the early version also.
