I'm only guessing, but probably not a lot of snipers would seem likely to be writing "ripping yarns" about what they saw through their scopes as they plied their trade.

Indeed. Many wouldn't even talk about it, let alone write about it.
20 years ago, I met one of the few remaining sniper veterans from the 43rd Wessex Div., and other than mentioning the gallantry of the sniper Sgt of the 5th DCLI, a Sgt. Long, who won a DCM during Operation Goodwood for his sniping and recce actions behind the lines, wouldn't talk about his 'profession' at all.
