I've been on sound stages and outdoor shoots and it is amazing how tawdry and cheap the stuff looks in person and how realistic and correct the same stuff looks on film. I saw one of the rifles from the first Planet of the Apes movie. It looked even cheaper than the cheapest kid's toy gun (Aluminum stock with an M1
carbine in it) but in the film they sure looked cool! Talk about 'movie magic'!

Shot Gun News had an article last year about movie prop rifles a good portion of them rubber. The article was about an outside contractor that leases his stock to movie produtions and how they are made and kept. Very intresting.

My wife hates it when I say, "that rifle hadn't even been invented yet" when watching a time-sensitive movie. She says, "can't you just WATCH the movie and not pick it apart?"
