G'day Woodsy. The RNZAF station I'm on about was past Ngaruawahia town on the right side, on the road into Hamilton. Was it Ohakea (or Wigram????) There was a sort-of complete one visible from the road. We used to play sport against the RNZAF blokes there occasionally - then enjoy a few beers afterwards. I put my name down for football and learned that football was what NZers called rugby. What I should have put my name down for was soccer!

I'm guessing you had a whole different experience before the beers...

You're right BAR........ I learned that NZ rugby was a lot different than the rugby we played at my school....... And that soccer was a game for wuss's!

Peter, the official name was RNZAF Te Rapa, now closed. Ohakea is now the main RNZAF base and is down near Palmerston North. Wigram is at Christchurch and has been closed for some years, although the RNZAF museum is still there in some old hangars and a new museum building. Years ago soccer was looked down on a 'girls' game, but is now quite popular in primary schools after some mothers expressed concerns about their litle darlings being exposed to the rough & tumble of rugby. I played as a lock until I was 34, and only gave it away when the previous seasons cracked ribs were playing up.

Hi Peter. Yes, Whenuapai is still going and is used for airforce passenger flights, as well as the Maritime Patrol squadron. Your memory is still OK!

Whenuapai the airstrip with the bloody great dip in the middle, you lost sight of the Herc as it took off down the strip for quite a while until it limbered up the other side on it's way back to Aus. Leaving you with your kit on the side of the runway waiting to be picked up by Bedford RL's for a trip to Paradise Valley, who ever named that place had a twisted sense of humour.

I saw a commercial silver colour JU52 tri-motor flying low over Dusseldorf Alt Stadt/Rhine bank last Sunday. Are many of them still in existence or even air worthy?
