Yours never went through this indignity in service and it would be a shame not to leave it as found to preserve it's history. As I said, the wooden grips stayed in service with the Army, Marines and/or Navy for as long as the bayonet was in good shape for service, not all were replaced.
gew8805, I was not aware of that, thank you for your advise.
I tought that wooden grips were replaced during WWII also on 16" bayonets before they were cut to 10".
This is the photo showing how one of the two grips has been repaired, unfortunatly not really a god repair I think.

I will keep the wooden grips even if my original intention was only to replace with plastic ones and to store the wooden grips safely.

I had found wooden grips in Franceicon but I wonder if they are original or just a reproduction.

Ah, with a better look, it appears that you can replace them with little fear, those are very rough.

The original wooden grips, if in good condition, were used on the M1905 bayonets as long as the long '05 stayed in service unless the bayonet needed complete refurbishment. When the long bayonets M1905 and M1942 were shortened and otherwise reworked, the plastic grips replaced the early wooden ones regardless of their condition. As far as I know, you will not find an officially shortened bayonet with wooden grips.

I had one with it's original wood scales. I've seen others too. They were on an early blade and the same thing seemed to apply. If the scales were OK then leave them. I'll bet that changed with time(probably only months).
    Regards, Jim

the original wood grip scales had the cutter marks , once they were worn or sanded they became smooth like the repaired one in your photo , i agree with your replcaement in this case ,

the M3 scabbords marked with USN were made for the plastic navy trainer bayonets , not issued and thus abundant in great condition , still an excellent example of the genuine article ,

the M8 / M8A1 scabords with B.M.CO [beckwith] , PWH [philladelpia work house - for the blind] , V.P.CO [victory plastic] , TWB , VIZ , WP & WD , all are legit US mfgrs , and they fit everything in the picture below except my Ka-Bar and M1icon

and one really does need a nice M9 to round thigs out , i have had a few , here are two , think i might have one left after the kids each took one to go with their ARs

    Nice collection A Square 10 !

The second M1905 US Navy bayo I have has grips in much better conditions.
I think it never entered in any war or battle.

Just came back home now with two new bayonets.

A M1icon 10" bayo for M1 Garand and M1905 16" bayo of 1917 "RIA", a friend told me this is a rare model, what do you think about ?

Definitely less RIA blades around and less yet that escaped cut down. You still need the M1910 scabbard though. As I do...Nice pair though.
