I have one just like it, but the sheath is dated 1986, and yes that is a sharpener.

Not a very good sharpener, but better than nothing. My Ontario Knife machetes are working tools. They get sharpened with a kitchen knife multi-steel-wheel sharpener which does an excellent job. There's not a better machete out there! The only problem I have with them is the rivets work loose.

Several years back someone brought out a standard looking machete except it had saw teeth on the back. The sporting goods store in our town that sold them said they got almost every one back with the blade broken. The large saw teeth gave the blade multiple places to break, and they did. The saw teeth would have been of dubious value anyway.

I also have a cheap Chinese knockoff somewhere. The scabbard is a "nylon tent like material" . overall this gear seems more substancial.
but I second on the loose rivets!
While this is probably good working kit, I intend to make this part of a 'Nam display for future generations to appreciate.
