What I do is spray a small amount of gun oil in the barrel, run a patch through it, spray the action and then wipe everything off without touching it again with my hands. Fingerprints will leave small salts on the metal which can lead to rust. So long as it is not stored in a humid environment, it should be safe for quite some time. In humid summer months I'll check them periodically to make sure the oil hasn't all evaporated.
What is probably more critical is when you actually fire the rifle. If it has corrosive ammo, you need to wash it down with water or ammonia to neutralize the corrosive salts and then dry it out and oil it. You need to do this as soon as possible after finishing firing.

what about under the barrel where it seats in the wood stock? I noticed a small amount of pitting there. Also, should I lightly oil the inside of the bolt? Is break free clp adequate?
