Late Springfield 1903
Serial # 1,480,289 puts the receiver in 1934 and the barrel (also SA) is dated 12-35. The stock is straight, 2 reinforcing bolts, finger grooved with a boxed SA over SPG on the side and a circle "P" (no serifs) firing proof. Handguard is period and matching. The bolt has "ns" on top of the handle and a punchmark and "5" on the underside.
She looks largely unmessed with. Not much wear. Does not have a Hatcher Hole. But she is sporting a few early parts (front sling swivel is split for example). The buttplate is course checkered. I've never seen such a "deep stamped" SA/SPG before.

RCS, unfortunately my rifle is not original. I was sportered when I got it. The original stock had been cut/rounded off in front of the lower band and heavily sanded. The markings were still faintly visible in good light. S.A.-S.P.G. cartouche and numbered to the rifle. Original numbered bolt had been butchered as well. It is also d/t for the Lyman 48 and Unertl blocks. Used it as it was for years but I've since ''restored'' it to resemble a U.S.
M.C. M1903/Unertl sniper.

I have #1502353, a 90%+ gun, SA 3-36 star gauged barrel, type S finger groove stock, Hatcher hole, SA/SPG cartouche, punch marked receiver bulge, NS bolt with punch mark, D128179 handguard. Split lower band swivel and prewar checkered buttplate
She has a rack number of 65 in half inch letters on heel, circle block P firing proof behind number 7 rear of the TG and has a muzzle of about 0.5 and a throat of 2. I believe this gun to be a completely original SA build.
There are apparently many guns of similar description around. I've seen several for sale recently, and have heard various speculations that they were manufactured for prisons; the Coast Guard; Coast Artillery units; the Post Office and other institutions. I wonder if one of the eminent authorities who preside in these '03 forums (CMP
, Culver
, Milsurps) would be interesting in compiling data about these beautifully fitted and attractive prewar rifles?

Another one! SA#1505537, 2-36 non star gauged bbl, SA/SPG cartouche on finger groove S stock, Hatcher hole, NS bolt numbered to another gun, in nice shape with a muzzle of about 1.2, D128179 NM hand guard, currently for sale on GB. Most of these guns seem to be in nice condition with good bores!
