Any ID on this scope? and a good larf too

Here's a current Trade me listing about a scope that reminds me of those odd compact sights on USAicon WW1 rifles, anyone know what it really is?

    http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...x?id=253531616
    scope writing = ELEITZ WETZIAR

Plus; here's the main part of the mans listing, I really like that longevity obviously runs in his family, and a lot of guts and glory too...

'I think this was my grandfathers, He fought in most wars from 1875 onwards (cept Vietnam). So would prob have come from WWI or WWII, I think it is off a 303 but someone out there will know for sure.'

Lessee, 1875, born about 20 years earlier in 1857, that would be about 82 years old in 1939, just in time to enlist for ww2, and 96 years old at enlistment to fight in Korea, those commies must have been terrified, and er 102 at Korea closing...
hmm, assuming a NZ/british background...1875 maori wars, then boer war, ww1, ww2, korea, now that would be a chest full of medals!

Ernst Leitz are the manufactures of the Leica Camera (Leitz Camera).
What that looks like is some form of rangefinder, I couldn't quite see what was on the dial, it certainly wasn't a camera R/finder, but they did make all sorts for differant industries.

These sights are a fairly common souvenir - probably they were the sort of thing that could be conveniently carried away in an age before access to vast quantities of mechanical transport allowed people to raise their souveniring ambitions.

Stamp lookes like "WETZLAR" ... which would make it Leitz/Wetzlar. And the base looks as if it might fit instead of the dstandard Mauser K98kicon rear sight.
