OT: Peter L: what was last years Stens on the books?

    Peter,

Just a query from a Sten discussion on another board:

What was the last year that MoD still had Stens on issue somewhere or in store? Which models?

I'd guess it would be mid-1970s, and that there would be a few MkIISs and MkVs with some RAF or TA unit?

I don't know about the Britishicon, but I can tell you that a "Certain Intelligence Agency" in the US had many MK IIs & MK Vs stiin storage up thru the 1970s. I remember once seeing a silanced MK IIs, still in its original heavy cardboard "drop box", along w/the accessories, mags & intsruction pamphlet (in several languages). It looked looked to have never been used. They were all finally shipped to a US Army arsenal to be cut up & melted down, I think, around 1980. So sad.

Last Sten guns still in service with the Regular and Territorial Army were Mk2S's and 6s in 1972. Prior to that, Mk5's and a scattering of Mk2's in 1970. However, some cadet Forces still had live Stens for many years. Hence the requirement to draw up a specification for an 'official' DP version in the mid 70's

I was told the other day that they recently found a pile of Stens in store in the CF system.

Also told that it didn't take them long to ZF them into little pieces.
