    Shotgun Restoration

I recently acquired this shotgun from a friend for the princely sum of Zero.
He knows how much I enjoy firearms and figured he would just give me the shotgun and see what I could do with it.

First off, I have no idea of the make or model and that is my first goal. I suspect it’s a no name drug store special. Other than a couple matching serial numbers on the upper and lower tang, there are ZERO internal or external markings.
Any help in identifying this old shotgun would be greatly appreciated.

The action breaks by placing the hammer in half cock and pushing down the side lever/trigger guard with your thumb.

The action is quite loose and there is a gap at the breach when the action is closed. I suspect that this worn catch would have to be welded up and re-fitted.

The furniture is very rough with two big chips around the upper tang.

    Front and rear sites

Disassembly was pretty uneventful. No stuck screw despite me not using any oil. I guess that’s a good sign. There was quite a lot of crud inside the action though.

This stock will not be an easy fix but it will challenge me well beyond the Argentineicon Rolling Block.

This should keep me busy while I wait for .43 Spanish components to arrive for the RRB.

    Joel.

I KNOW that action! Can't remember the name right now, but a high school friend had a LONG barreled version that was a family "hair-loom". Haven't seen it in probably 20 years or so...

As you suspect, it's more of a "hardware store" quality shotgun, but the opening mechanism is just different enough to be interesting.

BTW, as it isn't a milsurp, this thread may end up in the "OT" watering hole forum.

The next patient is already on the operating table!

OK operating team! This looks like fun!

No Great Antique. No fear of flak from the Don't Touch That Crud - It's Original faction.
Joel, you can apply what you have learnt with the Argentineicon RB with confidence. And it is a shotgun, so you can refurbish the barrel by cleaning and honing it. You are at home in an engineering environment, so you should be able to beg or borrow what you need. You could even make a barrel hone yourself.

Just one caution. I am not an electrochemistry expert, so I do not know what effect the electrolytic cleaning might have on the plating. I do not even know what the plating metal is. Tin, maybe? Or nickel? Jmoore, you know this type of shotgun - what is it likely to be?

No. Do not rush in and do any welding or carving! A new hinge pin, yes. It will have to be hand fitted. Been There, Done That. I can describe exactly what to do, but give me a couple of days to compose a though-out contribution.

    Have fun!

    Thin nickel plate.

I would generally advise against trying to bring this shotgun to "shooting condition" unless you stick to black powder shells. Cast iron frame and mostly unhardened steel working bits except for hammer, trigger, etc. IIRC this design is pre-smokeless powder era.

Still, IF you don't spend any more than you absolutely have to, AND you've nothing better to do, have at it! It'll build experience, if nothing else.

Dang, I can't recall the name...American Something, Something? let's see:

    Crescent Arms
    Iver Johnson Gun and Cycle
    Lefever
    Marlin
    Champion
    ETC., ETC.

Give me a while, or surf some, this action is fairly scarce anymore, mostly because the rest wore slap out long, long ago!

I agree, but there's no harm in Joel practising a bit of hand-fitting on this "hair-loom" (I like that). It's one of those "doesn't cost much except endless time" actions. Confidence-boosting if it works - and from what we've seen Joel do so far, it will.

Not nailed down yet. Yours isn't the model in the thread above, but the "American Trigger Action" seems familiar...

I suspect if you refitted the latch and maybe replace the hinge pin, it could be fired again with low pressure loads and lead shot only. Not sure it's worth that much effort though?
