Why? .. I don't know…
Some guesses…
The colour scheme selection and saving as a default programming method hasn't change in over six years. I assume when you say you've reset the default mode many times, you have actually performed a SAVE of that colour scheme which updates your permanent site account record, after you selected it?
The three graphics colour schemes are Light, Medium (Default) and Dark. The Medium colour scheme is the default style that new members get assigned at the time of registration to the site, as well as what all un-registered guests see.
Whatever colour screen you save as your default will stay that way until you select and SAVE a new one to your site account record.
Here's a detailed help thread that explains how you can change temporally, or save permanently, your colour scheme of choice.
My screen is too dark!! How do I change my colour scheme on the milsurps.com site? (click here)
By the way, you can do the same thing with the "sticky thread" display. At the very TOP of the forum, there are special threads called "stickies", which always appear first when a forum is displayed. They are usually threads which contain good information, especially for new collectors, that is important enough to have it constantly appear at the top of any forum. If the constant display of sticky threads distracts you, just click on the collapsible box arrow at the top right of the any forum listing, so that the stickies don't appear for you when you view any forum thread listing. If you want to see the sticky thread list once more to see if there's anything new, although the new posts function tells you that anyway, just click the same arrow again and it opens up the sticky list at the top of the forum. From session to session, it automatically remembers the last status (open or closed) that you left it in.
If you're still experiencing problems, leave me a phone number via PM (Private Message) and I'd be happy to call you at our expense to help you diagnose and work through the process of addressing the issue.
For now, I have manually set (and saved) your default colour scheme to be "Light", on your stored user record on our site.
Hope this helps…
Regards,
Doug

One other thing ~~~ I have searched and don't recall a place (location on the page) or a "SAVE" prompt feature for this anywhere.
Where is the page color "SAVE" located ??
TIA, Don
