RCMP pistol?
My father has a pistol with a ring built onto the grip which was sold to him as an RCMP (Mountie) pistol with the explanation that the ring was to secure the gun to the saddle horn in case it was dropped... can anyone verify the historical accuracy of this? Thanks!

The lanyard ring was an option on the Colt revolvers. It would depend on what the pistol is instead.

The lanyard was intended to secure the weapon to the individual's person so that it would not be dropped/lost. Lanyards were fitted to the ring on the butt of the weapon with the snap and then looped around the individual's neck or belt. We wore them attached to the belt with the Browning HP pistol.
