    Unknown item

I just acquired what appears to be a military item. It looks something like 2 45/70 cases (without rims) chained together with one a bit smaller than the other so it fits inside the other. The inside one has a slot cut near the end with a small mirror inside at an angle similar to one end of a periscope. I'm thinking it may be for examining a bore or chamber. It's marked Lauder Co. with 1916 under the name. It also has a Canadianicon broad arrow stamp. Has anyone seen one or know anything about them? Sorry, I can't seem to master posting photos but could e-mail some.

That's exactly what it is. If your description is accurate it is. They're early and scarce now so hold on to it.

    Something like this ?
Available with or without the 'handle'

Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

I was just talking to a collector friend who told me they are called bore reflectors or bore mirrors. I actually bought 2 of them. The one I described by Lauder Co./1916 has a steel chain (rusty). The other has a brass chain and on the end, C.F.B.C over 1916. Does anyone have any knowledge of the value of these items?

Value of an item.......... There's always two prices. Are you selling those or want to buy some more?

Well, Collectors Source (click here) is selling one for $45, but yours is Canadianicon marked so it might be worth more.

Here's some more information on them …

While an appropriate accoutrement to any LE collection these little jems also have a practical use today. They will fit most military rifle chambers well enough to work. They will also fit most 30 caliber commercial chambers, especially anything based on the 30-06 and 308 cases. I always take one in my pocket to gun shows. They're easier and quicker to use to check a bore than most bore lights. I find the Vickers tool (the version with the handle) a bit easier to use in the field but both will work.
