Mi bayo turned Factory made knife
I picked this up off eBay for $51(including shipping) because I have always wanted a knife with this grip configuration. I was given to understand that these were originally made as M1 bayonets by a company called "Kutmaster" but, they were rejected because the attachments wouldn't hold. So somewhen the company turned what they had on hand into knives? WWII? Post war as sporting knives?? Anyway, it's clear this one had the blade altered and was never cut for a bayonet lug. The hole for the release is there but no release of course.
There wasn't a sheath or scabbard so I'll just make a WWII era type leather sheath for it.
Since this isn't a military issue anything, I took the liberty of polishing the blade a bit since it was pretty nice to begin with. It was pitted sometime in the past and those marks remain but it looks pretty nice naytheless I think.
Another nice thing about it is that it throws remarkably well. I struck it truly 11 times before missing a stick. Darn nice!
Anyway, I know it's no big deal but, it doesn't strike me as something you see every day so I thought I would hang it out here.

Btw, It's not really not near as shiny as it looks in the pics, that's flash or sun glare. I have not polished the cross guard or butt at all.

Kutmaster bought all the remaining unfinished bayonets and M3 fighting knives at wars end. This was all unfinished and incomplete parts and blanks. They created knives for consumtion of the civilian population because there was a shortage apparently of knives. These were never military.

That's a different variation of what I've heard so far elsewhere. I was told that they were from a contract of bayonets that were defective and the order canceled, the manufacturer made them into knives. I knew these were never issued or bought by the military at all as far as I know. but you don't see them very often and then they were well made, as a knife anyway, though I haven't had a chance to put the steel to the test yet.
No matter what, I still like it's looks!

You can find them with the blade you have and the M7(?) blade and some are marked M3 or other bayonet maker marks. Most all I've seen are marked by Kutmaster and none that I saw that were original had been blued or parked. They will come with mortise slot or not, with the holes for the lock and button or not, depending where they were when the war ended. I think if you search around here you will find other pics of these both the 1905 bayonets and the M3-M4 types. The scabbards are in fact a well made leather affair that would stand up to long hard use. You will find the steel is exactly as good as the finished bayonets.
