M1 carbine ?
Hi all,
I have a surplus M1
Carbine, not even sure of manufacturer becasue sight covers it. Is there anything I need to know or should look for? I have not even shot it yet and had it for about 5 years now.
thanks

list the serial number, that will let us tell you maker. Also get a flashlight and look under the sight the best you can, you will see at least a few letters to give you a hint. IN=Inland N= National Postal Meter, etc.
But we really like pictures.

Welcome.
"Anything you need to now" meaning what? Shooting, storage, parts, value? There are a lot of variables. Just saying the serial number is covered lets us know it has an adjustable rear sight. Meaning later production or it has been through a rebuild.
Pictures of the full carbine both sides. If you don't know how to break it down then some close up pictures. Rear sight, barrel band, sling well, right rear of stock, trigger housing. Areas like those will tell a lot about your carbine.

Kevin, a neat trick to pull that serial number and manufacturer is slide a strip of tin foil between the rear sight and receiver. Then using dental floss drag it back and forth as if you are flossing your teeth
. Once you've done that for a bit pull the tin foil out and you will see the information transferred to the foil. It's like magic

I tried it once and the tin foil moved on me. Seems like I tried a bit of Scotch tape at both ends of the tin foil, and then it worked! Probably would have been obvious to anyone else to try that first.

HI all,
Just looked at the M1
carbine and it is made by IBM Corp, the serial number is 3658364. The barrel has IBM on it right before the front sight.
